  1. About the GNOME System Tools

  4. - Targeted to desktop users:

  6.   These tools are intended to simplify the tasks of configuring a Unix system
  7.   for workstations. They are not intended for configuring Unix servers.
  8.  
  9. - Unified system configuration:
  10.  
  11.   Configuring different Unix systems is different; every Unix system has
  12.   different ways of being administrated. The GNOME System Tools aspire to
  13.   unify these systems.

  15. - Multi-platform:      
  16.  
  17.   Each one of the GNOME System Tools is split in two parts: a backend (which
  18.   is typically written in Perl) and a user interface frontend (which is
  19.   typically written in C or Python).

  21.   The backends are written in a way that should allow us to quickly adapt
  22.   them to various different flavors of Unix; the backend probes your system
  23.   and parses the existing system files. When the user has finished editing
  24.   the system settings, the configuration is written back as patches to the
  25.   system files.

  27.   This means that the GNOME System Tools use whatever configuration files are
  28.   available on your system, and you can still edit those files by hand or
  29.   with other configuration tools without conflicts or data loss.
